Photographing in constant inclement weather, I was moved profoundly by the veil it left on an already bleak and depressed urban landscape. Ever present Army Patrols further prohibited the normal comings and goings of a modern industrial city. Action and “incident“ were not dramatic; the pictorial moment was to be found instead in the subtle interaction of children and their surroundings. Youth were constant reminders of this city’s struggle for rental. Their play in vacant lots, on dilapidated roof tops and along graffiti murals was the most moving symbol of the paradox of this city where hope ignores despair. The children prevails.
